PENNY HARDY’s interest in three-dimensional forms, coupled with a strong connection to natural and human landscapes led her to create life-size sculptures using a unique medium. The British artist chose scrapped machinery to build pieces that express raw human emotion in her recent series “Blown Away.” Hardy chose metal because the equipment and mechanisms made with the alloy were designed for strength and then rejected when no longer useful. “By using discarded manmade metal items—which have been so skillfully made and used to create their own mechanical energy—I hope to extend their life in another form, re-use that energy for a different purpose, and exchange their function to create a new entity,” she said. Hardy displayed her work from the “Blown Away” series at Beaulieu Palace and Gardens earlier this year.
