October 2019 - Created by artists Annie Han and Daniel Mihalyo of Lead Pencil Studio, Seattle, Non-Sign II is the second in a series of concepts addressing signage in the American landscape. The sculpture consists of a web of blackened stainless steel rods welded together to create the negative space of a billboard. The 50-foot-wide by 30-foot-tall project is located along U.S. Interstate 5, just south of the U.S.-Canada border between Seattle and Vancouver. Non-Sign II attempts to reflect on the confounding nature of the border context and expand awareness of the abstract and natural conditions inherent at the site. “This sculpture attempts to quietly reorient the familiar highway landscape and alter the interpretation of subsequent billboards on either side of the border,” the artists state. “In the effort to downplay the significance of crossing a border, the work is intentionally non-declarative and open in all respects—materially, perceptually and thematically.”
