Keeping it together

By Lisa Rummler

June 2010- At many weddings, proms and miscellaneous black-tie events, you can see them. People even can spot them at business meetings. If they're reflective, the sun glints off of them with the wave of a hand. If they're at just the right angle, you hear them as they make contact with a hard surface.

Cuff links: the small but significant "ornamental device ... for passing through buttonholes to fasten shirt cuffs," according to Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary.

They can be made of nearly any material, from plastic Legos to mother-of-pearl to metal--including recyclable, anodized aluminum. This is the material designer David Ericsson uses for the VC1 cuff links from VOID Watches, Hong Kong.

These 19-mm-diameter cuff links are CNC lathed in a single piece, and they are available in four colors: silver, gold, black and red. They will last a lifetime, according to the VOID Watches' website.

"Every detail is not only carefully proportioned but also made to fit the machine and the tools by which they are made," according to an article on Dezeen.com. "For example, the bottom angle in the cone in the front end of the cuff link is 118 degrees, the standard tip angle of a drill."

Obvious contrasts and underlying similarities helped inspire Ericsson to create the cuff links, he said in a release. "I think there is something really interesting in the concept of creating jewelry in a standard factory using the same machines that pump out engine parts in the main time," Ericsson said.
