Robotic Technology

Supporting role

By Lisa Rummler

May 2010 - In the course of a day, people working with robotic welding automation cells rarely--if ever--hear someone say, "Lights, camera, action!"

Brian Simons is an exception.

Simons is a robotic programmer for the Automation Application Group at The Lincoln Electric Co., Cleveland.

During the filming of "Iron Man 2", he helped operate and maintain a Lincoln Electric automated welding robot cell, featuring a Power Wave i400 welding power source and a FanucARC Mate 100iC robotic arm.

"Being involved with the film was truly an incredible experience," Simons said in a press release. "Responding to immediate client needs at Lincoln prepared me to react on the studio's set at a moment's notice. This was great exposure for Lincoln to demonstrate the level of technology involved in welding today."

"Iron Man 2" stars Robert Downey Jr. as engineering genius Tony Stark, who uses Lincoln Electric equipment to fabricate his superhero suit.

Downey and Jon Favreau, director of "Iron Man 2," autographed the Power Wave i400 and the robotic arm used on the set of the movie.

According to a press release, the complete automation welding cell is on display in the lobby of Lincoln Electric's Automation Division.

Lincoln Electric MIG and TIG welding equipment was also featured in the original "Iron Man," which was released in 2008. According to a press release, it made more than $117 million at the box office in its first two weeks.

The sequel, which opened May 7, also stars Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Mickey Rourke, Samuel L. Jackson and Scarlett Johansson. FFJ
