Ford Industrial specializes in fabrication for parking garage rehabilitations

December 2009- Any structure exposed to the elements will suffer wear and tear over time. Some take more abuse than others, though, enduring things beyond wind, rain and extreme temperatures.

Take parking garages, for instance. These structures must withstand the weight of dozens of vehicles as they sit idle and stream in and out.

Given all this, it's critical for parking garages to have durability and longevity--and be as structurally sound as possible.

As with anything, though, age and use can take their toll. That's when parking garage rehabilitation comes in. When this need arises anywhere along the East Coast from Maine to Baltimore, Ford Industrial Ltd., Buffalo, N.Y., is always happy to help.

Founded more than 25 years ago by Jim Ford, who remains owner of the company, Ford Industrial's fabricators and welders annually produce several tons of custom railings for custom and residential projects.

Ford Industrial will also do small structural projects, but it has carved a niche in parking ramp renovations and parking garage rehabilitations. According to its Web site, the company works as a prime subcontractor for two of the largest contractors in the industry.

"Basically, we'll go into an old parking garage and make sure that it's structurally sound, that the steel's up to code," says Ford. "[But if] you drive into a parking garage, and you see the concrete moving a lot, that means the steel has broken inside of the concrete."

Two heads are better than one
Ford Industrial works with National Restoration Systems Inc., Rolling Meadows, Ill., for many of its parking garage rehabilitation projects.

According to NRS' Web site, "We are general contractors that specialize in restoring and preserving our nation's deteriorated concrete and masonry structures, including parking garage restoration, concrete restoration, masonry repair, expansion joints, bridges, dams [and] stadiums."

The rundown
At its Buffalo facility, Ford Industrial uses ironworkers, press brakes, shears, drill presses and burning tables, among other equipment.

The company's capabilities include plasma and oxy-fuel shape cutting, sand blasting, heat treatment, band sawing, and MIG, TIG and stick welding. There is also a full-scale blacksmith shop on-site.

Additionally, Ford Industrial offers mobile welding services and has several trucks devoted to this purpose. The company's mobile welding trucks will go to work sites throughout the Northeast, and they can be there within days.

Despite its varied capabilities, however, what really makes Ford Industrial stand out is its commitment to quality and positive growth, according to Ford.

"We're [always looking] to grow and take advantages of new opportunities out there," he says. FFJ
