Domestic reigns supreme

By Russ Olexa

August 2009- Perhaps your company's considering the purchase of a new press. Or maybe you want to expand production capabilities with new hydraulic press brakes or plate shears. Internationally imported equipment usually looks like domestic machines and often costs less up front.

But when you take into account service and parts availability, higher downtime and lost productivity, the initial savings quickly diminish, if not disappear.

"On price alone, offshore equipment may seem attractive at first glance," said Steve Schurman, director of sales and marketing for Pacific Press Technologies, Mount Carmel, Ill., in an American Machinist article. "But when you consider the faster field service, parts availability and track record of most domestic suppliers, there's really no comparison."

In reality, when purchasing new press equipment, domestic suppliers are often the smarter alternative for many reasons.

First, easily accessible repair personnel are often rare for offshore suppliers. Second, domestic suppliers are usually quicker in terms of shipping, and they have parts more readily available.

Combined, the ultimate result is often less downtime, as well as more efficiency and productivity throughout the entire plant.

In addition, domestic press equipment is typically covered by a comprehensive warranty, a benefit sometimes unavailable from offshore suppliers. FFJ
