Take a seat

By John Loos

July 2009 - Metal isn't always immediately associated with comfort, but for some furniture designers, materials such as lightweight aluminum can be used to provide comfort along with distinct visual grace. In fact, metal is considered the "jewelry" of home design by many in the furniture and home decor industries. In April, at the Salone Internationale de Moblie in Milan, British designer Jasper Morrison Ltd., London, showed two collections of uniquely designed chairs. One of these collections was its pipe stacking chairs, formed from tubular aluminum with backs available in punched sheet aluminum or wood. Available in various finishes, the pipe chairs are designed for the contract market and come in armless chair, armchair, barstool and table iterations. The tables come with beechwood plywood tops, ideal for outdoor use.

Durable design
The pipe chairs are also polished or painted in polyester powder. As designer Laurence Mauderli explains, the chairs strive for simplicity, functionality and an understated attractiveness.

"I was looking to design a chair for cafes and restaurants which would be light, good looking, stackable and provide comfort and good atmosphere," says Laurence Mauderli, designer of the chairs.

"The chair is both light and very strong," he adds.

The chairs were produced in conjunction with Magis Design, Motta di Livenza, Italy, and, according to CBS News, created using bicycle-building techniques. In fact, Jasper Morrison is no stranger to metalwork. The firm has a line of 18/10 stainless steel cutlery, a family of stainless steel serving trays and bowls, stainless steel salt and pepper mills, a line of plate tables with powder-coated cast aluminum legs and steel frames, and a set of tables built with swaged steel tubes, aluminum-laminate tops and cast steel bases.

"We look to design products which provide long term solutions both physically and visually," says Mauderli. FFJ
