OEM Report: Automotive

Speed vs. green

By Russ Olexa

April 2009- Change some sheet metal, tweak a suspension and add a few new electronics, and you have a new car.

But this really wasn't what people were looking for at the 2009 Geneva, Switzerland, Auto Show. It was more about the unique sheet metal designs that surround ultra-high-performance cars and high-horsepower drivetrains that people really wanted to see.

However, there was another unique presence at the show: vehicles moving away from gas-powered engines to electric.

Fourteen electric or hybrid electric/gas vehicles were displayed at the show, including:

  • Brabus all-electric Tesla Roadster
  • Chrysler 200c EV Concept
  • Dodge Circuit EV
  • All-electric Protoscar Lampo
  • All-electric Hochschule prototype
  • Honda Insight Hybrid
  • Mitsubishi i Miev hybrid prototype
  • Opel Ampera hybrid
  • Pininfarina-Bollore all-electric
  • Ruf eRuf all-electric
  • Hybrid truck Technologie A9 Alreda
  • Toyota Prius hybrid
  • Chevy Spark hybrid
  • All-electric Comarth vehicles

Supercars that premiered at the show include: Aston Martin DBS Volante, Vantage and Lagonda; Bentley Supersports; Bugatti Centenaire; Bitter Vero Sport; Lamborghini Estoque; Rolls-Royce 200EX and Spyker C8 Aileron.

Of the supercars, Aston Martin has brought back its Lagonda Mark for 2012 production. The model name has languished for years without a car on the market. This new automobile is an SUV concept that will be offered at about $210,000. The styling is different, especially compared with Aston's other sleek models. Power for the Lagonda concept comes from a V12 engine and is built on a Mercedes-Benz GL platform.

Lamborghini's new Estoque is a new supercar from the manufacturer but without a clear indication of what powertrain the company will be using. Although the concept is a four-door sedan, the company has made it look more like a two-door coupe with strong flowing lines. It uses a front mid-engine, permanent, all-wheel drive with a sophisticated suspension system and a state-of-the-art technology package.

Chevrolet's new B-segment Spark hybrid was also introduced at the Geneva Auto Show. At one time, this concept was offered as the Beat. Now, the Beat has become the Spark and gained an additional two doors, although the interior has retained the concept's two-tier instrument panel design. The car's new global design strategy has its exterior styling designed to appeal to both young and mature drivers, and its angular cab-forward cabin provides extra passenger space because of the car's widely spaced wheel-at-each-corner design. It will be powered by 1- and 1.2-liter engines. It goes on sale in Europe later this year and will be sold in the United States, India and other global markets soon after.

Chrysler boasts that the Dodge Circuit EV has a sub 5-second 0 to 60 mph time that will keep most drivers satisfied with its performance. It was noted in press releases that Chrysler is also developing an all-electric minivan and an all-electric Jeep that has an electric motor in each wheel for high-traction rock crawling.

The reception that its electric vehicles garnered at the show was a positive boost for Chrysler; one that it could use much more of. FFJ
