Blazing brightly

Fiber discs newly formulated to finish carbon steel parts

May 2019 - Orange conveys warmth and energy, and it’s often used as a signal color to set items, like safety cones and markers, apart from their surroundings. And, in a manufacturing environment where abrasives can be ubiquitous, a brightly colored grinding disc stands out.

Abrasives are used for cutting, grinding, rust and paint removal, surface blending, finishing, and polishing on all types of metals; however, there are some notable considerations when working with carbon steel.

“Carbon steel is significantly softer acting than stainless steel and other materials, like Inconel and titanium,” says Patrick Carroll, senior product manager at Norton | Saint-Gobain Abrasives. “A key requirement for grinding carbon steel is picking the right grit size to get the proper finish, while increasing productivity.”

Norton | Saint-Gobain Abrasives has developed a new formulation for its Norton Blaze fiber disc line, one that is still the trademark bright orange color but is specifically designed for better performance on carbon steel and other soft-to-grind metals—applications where the original Blaze F980 for stainless steel might be overgraded.

The F980 has a grinding aid that provides a cool cut on harder-to-grind materials such as stainless steel, Carroll says, but that feature is not included on the BlazeX F970, resulting in improved performance on carbon.

“An important benefit with Norton BlazeX F970 is it provides a fast initial rate of cut that is consistent, due to its improved abrasive and heavy backing,” Carroll says. The discs have a non-supersized design and a ceramic alumina micro-fracturing grain that continually exposes new, sharp grain edges during use. “Grinding carbon with BlazeX F970 reduces loading, and the disc does not leave burn marks.”

Making a switch

Norton | Saint-Gobain has a large metal fabrication customer that switched to BlazeX P970 from a competitive ceramic fiber disc. Since the switch, the fabricator increased its productivity due to a reduction in the effort required during grinding, while saving 15 percent on the cost of abrasives.

Norton BlazeX P970 fiber discs are available in coarse and medium grits, ranging from 36 to 80, and sizes including 41⁄2 in. by 7⁄8 in., 5 in. by 7⁄8 in. and 7 in. by 7⁄8 in., with both standard hole and speed-change attachments.

Each disc can be used with an air-cooled backup pad that has a slotted hub design and curved ribs to draw heat away from the grinding zone, reducing disc loading and extending life. Each can alternatively be used with a smooth face speed-change backup pad. Carroll says the air-cooled pads are best for durability and the smooth face for finishing.

“Medium-density backup pads are for all-purpose use and, frankly, are the most popular pads used,” he adds. “Hard density backup pads are for applications where aggressive cutting action is required.”

Customers who want to compare the BlazeX discs for themselves have the option of trying out a test kit. “Each test kit has a box of Norton BlazeX F970 and Blaze F980 fiber discs in it along with an information card reinforcing where each is used—BlazeX F970 for carbon steel, Blaze F980 for stainless steel,” Carroll says. “This test kit provides information to remind customers where each product is maximized and provides the ability to easily test both, depending on which material is being ground.”

Using the correct disc for the job saves operators frustration and lowers the cost companies must spend on abrasives.

“For manufacturers, it’s all about time, and reducing the grinding time saves them money,” Carroll says. “BlazeX F970 has significantly longer life and makes cooler cuts on carbon and other softer-to-grind materials, which reduces the time it takes operators to grind and decreases the number of discs they use.” FFJ
