Workshops for Warriors success stories: Evan, class of 2016

Evan was attracted to the high demand for skilled labor in the manufacturing industry, and after just one semester found a job as a CNC Mill Operator that he loves in his home state.

August 11, 2016 - Evan enlisted in the Marine Corps in June 2011 and experienced three deployments in his 5 years in the Military. This included Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and Rota, Spain, both with a Fleet Anti Terrorism Security Team (FAST). His third deployment was with the 3rd Battalion 1st Marines where he was deployed to the middle East locations of Oman, Jordan, and Northern Africa in the country of Djibouti.

Not unlike many of the Veterans we see come through Workshops for Warriors programs, during his Military service Evan envisioned his life as a police officer working in his home state of Oregon. He had plans to work in the State Police Department where he would pursue a career as a K9 handler on the Force.

“After being injured on my last deployment nearly losing my leg, I decided I needed a career that would best suit me that would be less intense on my body. I needed to find a career base that would allow me to advanced and keep me interested in a career length opportunity.”

Once he realized that law enforcement was not the path he wanted to take upon transitioning, he explained that he knew the struggles that many Veterans face when transitioning and used the help of his fellow Marines to make sure that he was as prepared as he could be before leaving.

“Many Veterans that I know have struggled in all aspects, but it’s normal in the military for those that have experienced things pass on the knowledge in order to help, prevent, and/or prepare their brothers for life outside. After hearing enough and seeing the struggles of my fellow veterans, I decided to be proactive about my soon to be situation of transition.”

Evan heard about Workshops for Warriors from a Marine in his unit who went through the Machining program. After he heard about his success, he called the office to learn more information and signed up the very next semester.

“Learning about the manufacturing industry and the statistics proven to be true about the industry….that made me strive for success. My confidence came from my ability to learn hands-on by the Instructors there at Workshops. With a much smaller class than a normal college or trade school, the one-on-one education is there much more often.”

Evan added that because of Workshops for Warriors he was able to pursue and eventually obtain a job as a CNC Mill Operator at BenchMade Knife Company after just one 16-week semester of machining courses.

“Money is always an important thing. Having a family, you have to be able to support each other. Sometimes more importantly is how much you enjoy your job. I enjoy where I became employed in my home state and it happened relatively quick. I hope to achieve further education with on-the-job experience. The opportunities are endless.”

When asked if there was anything else Evan wanted to say about his experience at Workshops for Warriors, he added, “Positive. That is the one word that describes the impact Workshops has had on my life. Transition is the worst thing about the military. Having an opportunity such as Workshops takes a huge weight off of your shoulders. Whether you’re on your way out, or you’ve honorably served your country, all of the men and women at Workshops are more than happy to help change your life for the better.”

Evan earned the following nationally recognized portable and stackable credentials at Workshops for Warriors:
