Effective analysis

Superchute works with Abtex to create a safer and more efficient manufacturing environment

June 2016 - The owner of Superchute, Andy Anson, wanted to maximize his company’s productivity and secure one of its potentially dangerous wraparound chute systems.

Anson, whose Montreal-based company has invented and manufactured chute systems, debris nets, guardrail systems and column forms since 1990, worried that the burrs at the ends of a mill-cut, four-foot aluminum extrusion imperiled his employees and customers.

Hoping to both increase efficiency and promote safety, Anson contacted Abtex Corp., a Dresden, New York-based manufacturer of integrated machine and brush deburring systems.

Abtex engineers analyzed Superchute’s production process and concluded that a customized, single-end deburring system would dramatically strengthen its overall effectiveness. The engineers deduced that the system’s dust collector would safeguard Superchute’s work environment and help maintain cleanliness on the shop floor. Anson agreed with Abtex’s analysis and decided to purchase the machine. Abtex’s deburring system immediately augmented Superchute’s output and allowed Anson to focus on developing more advanced creative chute solutions. Despite its cost, Anson says he is thrilled he bought the machine.

“It was a substantial investment, but well worth it,” says Anson, noting that nearly nine times more pieces are deburred using the machine than previously were deburred by hand. “The system is absolutely perfect!”

Larry Johnson, an inside salesman and marketer at Abtex, discussed the tailored deburring system and recounted the relationship with Superchute.

“The deburring system [sold to Superchute] is one of our standard produced systems for aluminum deburring of saw-cut aluminum ends,” says Johnson, adding that mild steel parts are used to fabricate the system and raw materials are shaped to size using an in-house milling machine and drill press. “We worked with Superchute to modify the clamping of customers’ parts with the use of addition guides. This allows for several parts to be held and processed at once, rather than a couple of parts, to increase productivity.”

The disc-style brush supplied on the machine is made from a silicon carbide abrasive nylon filament that removes the burr, but does not change the geometry of the part and provides a slight edge radius, he says.

Johnson credits Abtex’s engineering manager, John Roman, for ensuring the system met Anson’s specific needs. Roman worked closely with Anson to accomplish Superchute’s goal to increase productivity and safety in the plant, says Johnson. “We sold him the most effective and efficient system for their needs and this saved Superchute capital costs and equipment space.”

By installing a safer and more efficient parts deburring system, Abtex proved to be the correct match for Andy Anson and Superchute. FFJ
