May 2016 - A lot of what we do in the steel industry revolves around a cliché phrase that many can quote, but don’t necessarily know how to apply in their day-to-day work life: “It’s who you know”. We exist in an industry where the same names abound; they just have different business cards. So how do we ensure we remain connected and further our business goals? In the same way education has evolved to incorporate improvements in technology, we need to use those same kinds of advancements in networking, without losing the importance of a “good old-fashioned handshake”.
The first approach to networking is one that has worked for decades: getting out and meet-ing people. This can include industry events or customer visits. In many cases, people respond better to a face-to-face meeting than emails or phone calls. Being able to put a name with a face and key in on personal mannerisms allows us to see how people respond to us, as well as how they are buying/selling.
