Day 2 Highlights: Fabtech 2014

By FFJournal staff

November 13, 2014 - Day 2 kicked off with a keynote from Vietnam veteran Rocky Bleier, former Pittsburgh Steelers running back and four-time Super Bowl champ, who gave an encouraging speech to the audience on persevering through business challenges.

There were press conferences from big OEMs, notably from machinery powerhouses Trumpf and Amada. But overall at the Atlanta, which is the smaller than the Chicago and Las Vegas installments, the show lacked the fanfare of the last two shows in terms of product releases or groundbreaking technology. But there are plenty of product updates across the board, for companies of all sizes.

Industrial laser maker Trumpf Inc. exhibited six machines including the TruLaser 5030 Fiber (featuring in December FFJ), and the new TruLaser 2030 and TruPunch 2000. Peter Hoecklin, the company’s new CEO as of July, indicated the economy is strong and the company is seeing activity across its product lines.

At Fabtech 2013, Amada America’s ENSIS thick cutting fiber laser was the main attraction. This year, Amada’s press conference was focused on its fiber lasers and automated robotic bending cell, but the big product was the LC 2515 C1 AJ, a combination punching and fiber laser cutting machine. Impressive and effective for fabricators who need the best of both worlds.

On the welding side, Lincoln Electric displayed many of its portable welding lines, such as the new Power Mig 250 multiprocess welder, a portable and easy to use welder for light industrial welding. The Viking apparel line, namely the Viking 3350 Powered Air Purifying Respirator, which pumps clean air into a helmet to keep welders cool and comfortable, proved that Lincoln Electric is just as committed to its gear as it is the welders.

We met up with Joshua Shaw, the Cincinnati-based Indy sprinter car restorer and welder. He’s also an adept painter, as displayed by the logos, designs and art he painted on ESAB welding helmets at the company’s booth outside between halls B and C.

ABB Robotics’ big debut was its integration of its IRB 2600 robot with a Tip Tig feeder system, Miller Dynasty 350 TIG welder and an MTD 250 workpiece positioner. The system makes for higher travel speeds for automated TIG welding, ideal for applications where aesthetics are important, like automotive and aerospace.
