One company’s scholarship pays for schooling and guarantees employment in the welding industry

February 2012 - Earning the first John J. Polacek Sr. Memorial Scholarship, established by JWF Industries, Johnstown, Pa., is the first step toward employment in the welding industry.

Once a student wins the full scholarship from JWF, available only through Pennsylvania Highlands Community College, Johnstown, Pa., the company will pay for the student’s education, provide a part-time job for the student while in school and offer an available position for the student at JWF Industries after he or she earns an associate degree in welding technology.

“It’s hard to get young people interested in the trade,” says Bill Polacek, owner of JWF Industries. “This business needs people who are willing to learn because it’s changing everyday.”

Polacek says too many students are confused about what to study in school. They are so concerned about finding a job that they aren’t finding a career. The economic situation in the United States is a direct cause for their concern, he adds.

“A lot of parents just want to send their kids to college,” he says. “But the percentage of kids who go to college with a degree in mind, finish it in four years and actually get a job in their field is less than 15 percent. So there’s a real disconnect.”

Deciding whether to go to college has become more challenging than ever. But the reality is the stability of a bachelor’s degree is not what it was in previous years. “It’s important to show kids another opportunity outside of the basic four-year bachelor’s degree program,” Polacek says.

Students should consider “they’re going to get a free education, a part-time job while they’re in school and a job after school, without having to repay loans. That’s not an opportunity a lot of kids going to college are getting,” he says.

Because the scholarship is funded solely by the company, the number of recipients chosen each year depends on budgets. “This year we chose four recipients, but it could be as high as 20 if we wanted, where each student will receive full scholarships,” says Polacek.

Last year was the first year the scholarship was awarded. JWF is expecting to expand the scholarship program in 2012.

History homework
The owners of JWF Industries, Bill, John and Tom Polacek, established the memorial scholarship to honor their late father, John J. Polacek Sr.

The elder John Polacek founded what is now JWF Industries in 1957 on the back of his pickup truck. When he passed away in 1987, his son Bill bought the company from his mother.

Since then, the family-run business has grown into a large welding, fabricating, machining and powder-coating company with more than 450 employees. It is celebrating its 24th anniversary as a top employer in the tri-county region.

The scholarship will be available to new and currently enrolled students in the welding technology program at Pennsylvania Highlands Community College. Two years of full-time tuition will be awarded (worth $8,470 for Cambria County residents) for as many recipients as the annual budget allows. FFJ
