Architects MIKE TONKIN and ANNA LIU completed the Singing Ringing Tree in 2006 as part of the Panopticons arts and regeneration project. The tree was constructed from 3 tons of stacked galvanized steel pipes, playing offbeat chords as the wind passes through them. Tonkin and Liu created a drill capable of cutting holes in the undersides of the tubes at a specific angle to achieve the choral effect. The tubes were then laid out in a circle with rings on the top and bottom, making it easy to bolt the structure together. The Singing Ringing Tree sits on a windy hill overlooking Burnley, a town in Lancashire, England.
