February, 2025- Bayfront Park, a new 5.5-acre park along the eastern edge of Mission Bay, San Francisco, celebrates the rich history of the evolving waterfront using reclaimed materials. Created by SURFACEDESIGN with input from the surrounding community, the project is the largest recipient of the Oakland Museum of California’s Bay Bridge Steel Program, originated in response to interest from Bay Area creatives to make the demolished bridge’s steel available for public use. Steel bridge sections are incorporated as sculptural features, act as supports for a pair of shade structures, are used as informal seating elements, and make up part of the observation deck, which cantilevers over the water’s edge.
