February, 2025- With a gap in its fabrication production band saw line, Cosen Saw International Inc. in Charlotte, North Carolina, designed and developed the NC-510MG horizontal scissor machine to fill it and introduced the equipment last year, says Andrew Robinson, manufacturers representative at Noble Solutions LLC in Maiden, North Carolina. His Cosen sales territory covers Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee.
With a line that includes semi-automatic mitering band saws and automatic band saws with manual mitering capability, Robinson notes that the automatic NC-510MG fills the void with its programmable mitering capabilities. If an end user must cut a 45-degree miter on one end of a workpiece, for example, and a 60-degree miter on the other, the customer saves time by programming the saw to cut that configuration nonstop rather than manually changing the miter and sawing it semi-automatically.
The programmable mitering capabilities are particularly beneficial when production sawing any type of framework or structures that require either different miter cuts or straight cuts and miter cuts, Robinson says.
“This machine can help you increase your production because you can program it to cut miters, which will free up the operator to be able to work on other projects as well,” he says.
Similar to other Cosen automatic band saws, the NC-510MG features the Smart NC-100 (SNC-100) technology, according to Robinson. The technology reportedly provides most of the benefits of numerical controlled saws at a moderate price and is programmable up to 100 different jobs, including quantity and length of cut with automatic multiple indexing and automatic kerf compensation. Cutting information such as blade speed, blade life, down feed speed, cutting rate and any error message is clearly displayed for ease of use.
BUNDLE CLAMPING
In addition, this latest machine model offers full capacity hydraulic top clamps to assist when bundling workpieces, Robinson says. “Some machines have top clamps that just bolt to the vises, but this machine has full strength so you can actually bundle clamp the full capacity of the machine if you wanted.”
However, it’s not recommended unless you’re only doing that a couple of times a month. Robinson compares using the full capacity top clamps excessively to driving a new car near its top rpm consistently. “If you have it topped out at 6,000 or 7,000 rpm all day, the car is not going to last you as long as if you only drive it around at 2,500 or 3,000 rpm.”
The NC-510MG band saw has an automatic miter tracking system.
The band saw has numerous standard features, some of which help extend blade life, according to Robinson. For instance, the adjustable cast iron guidearm helps maintain the proper tensile strength on a blade so that it lasts longer and also improves cut quality. The guide arm is adjusted to maintain the appropriate distance between both guide arms when the workpiece size changes.
“The more distance you have in between the guide arms where you don’t have material setting, the more likely you are to break the blade because your tensile strength of the blade goes down.”
Similar to other Cosen models, the NC-510MG features Smart NC-100 technology, which can program up to 100 diferent jobs.
Robinson also recommends keeping the motor-driven blade brush engaged to clean the gullet and teeth of the blade. Otherwise, material becomes trapped and is recut as the blade comes back through the workpiece. “It’ll end up causing your blade to break.”
TOOL LIFE EXTENDER
The saw also comes with Cosen’s Save-A Blade feature. After the machine gets through cutting, Robinson explains, the rear cast iron hydraulic vise will index back 2 mm. “That way, whenever the blade comes up, the blade is not dragging along both sides of the material.”
The band saw accepts a blade that measures 193-in. long by 1.25-in. wide by 0.042-in. thick and operates at a speed from 50 to 328 square feet per minute.
An adjustable flood coolant system is another standard feature, as well as an additional coolant hose for work bed and auger cleanup. Robinson notes that a micro-droplet applicator is available as an option to enable the use of mist coolant instead of flood. Being able to adjust the flood coolant keeps the blade/workpiece interface cool and the gullet clean, but flood coolant can make a mess, especially when sawing tubing or structural parts like I-beams and having coolant run down the line. “The customer may want to switch over to mist coolant to avoid that mess from happening and having to clean it up.”
The NC-510MG band saw offers full capacity hydraulic top clamps to assist when bundling workpieces.
Another beneficial option is the vise pressure regulator, he notes. The device enables an end user to control the vise pressure, such as reducing it to avoid damaging delicate workpieces like thin-wall tubing.
Heavy-duty roller tables are a popular option, but they are not proprietary products and can be ordered from numerous suppliers, Robinson says. “Some customers don’t get the heavy-duty roller tables because they already have roller tables, but most that are just starting their sawing operation will order heavy-duty roller tables from us when purchasing one of our machines.”
So far, Robinson says he has received inquiries and sales of the NC-510MG automatic fabrication production band saw, enabling the early adopter customers to significantly boost production while not experiencing any issues. “Setting up our automatic machines is very easy, and it’s very easy to train operators how to program them.”
