Ever evolving

Reducing weight—and ultimately fuel costs—is a top priority for the airline industry. The U.S. energy demand for aircraft will increase by 19 percent from 2.7 quadrillion Btu in 2007 to 3.3 quadrillion Btu in 2035, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration in its “International Energy Outlook 2010” report.

Making headlines

In the days and weeks after the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico last year, the media focused heavily on the unfolding story. The event dominated the news in the first 100 days of the spill, accounting for 22 percent of stories—nearly double the next-biggest story, according to a study by the Pew Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism.

Growing awareness

Is the end of U.S. manufacturing near? It may be easy for some people who don’t follow the sector closely to think so based on select media coverage that focuses on its challenges. However, we know the reality is different.

Global diversification

A fool may say, “Don’t put your eggs in one basket,” according to Mark Twain. “But the wise man saith, ‘Put all your eggs in one basket, and watch that basket!’” he writes in the novel “Pudd’nhead Wilson.” In Twain’s view in the book, spreading eggs among multiple baskets is akin to scattering one’s time, attention and funds thinly. It may be better to concentrate efforts on a single endeavor and ensure its safety.

Faulty perception

The manufacturing industry is facing an image crisis. Many uninformed people think of jobs in it as truly dark, dirty, old-world careers or, perhaps worse, they don’t think of manufacturing at all.

Changing landscape

The first year I attended IMTS in 1978, it was known as the International Machine Tool Show. The name changed to the International Manufacturing Technology Show in 1990 to reflect the changing industry. Through the years, the event's name is not the only aspect that has changed. Machine tool manufacturers also have experienced pretty incredible changes.

Let your voice be heard

The upcoming 2010 midterm elections will be decided by the largest political referendum this nation has ever witnessed. And I am convinced, regardless of what you are led to believe, history will show that it had nothing to do with being a Democrat or Republican but rather an American. People are angry. All you need to do is travel around the country and talk to everyday Americans to see they’re fed up. For far too long, our elected officials have put their own interests and ideologies above the people’s. Words written long before this year’s election cycle adequately sum up the state of our government.

Time will tell

The automotive industry is gaining strength, with companies such as Ford Motor Co. and General Motors posting increases in 2010 second-quarter net income.

More than motorcycles

Imagine you're standing among hundreds of thousands of people, all motorcycle enthusiasts. It's a summer day in South Dakota, and the sun glints off of the chrome on the bikes. The roar of engines rises above the collective voice of the crowd, and the smell of exhaust is in the air.
